The suspenders are fabric straps constructed to be worn over the shoulders to hold up and support trousers and utility belts. The straps of the suspenders are elasticated, but it is common to see some suspenders partially elasticated, and are typically woven forming an X or Y shape at the back. There are two types of suspenders, one used by individuals to keep trousers in place and combat suspenders to support pistol and cartridge belts. The modern type suspenders can be traced back to 1822. invented by Albert Thurston. Suspenders were widely worn following the invention due to the high cut of mid-nineteenth and early twentieth century trousers which made the use of a belt impossible. During the 1930's, the transition from suspenders to belts had started to take place, soon suspenders became nearly obsolete. Soldiers serving in the military are issued pistol and cartridge belts, these belts could typically be worn alone but were designed to be used with a M-1928 pack or to suspenders. The suspenders were widely used during the Second World War. The suspenders were attached to the belt with snap hooks front and rear, this would transfer weight to the shoulders and keep the load in proper position. Suspenders are used by military personnel, tactical operators, law enforcement and other individuals to support pants and belts. The suspenders are commonly referred to as pants suspenders, work suspenders, suspenders belt, clothing suspenders, belts suspenders, belt suspenders, Y suspenders, Y back suspenders, X suspenders, H suspenders, military suspenders, tactical suspenders, elastic suspenders.
